Juice Cleanse Basics: Have You Tried a Juice Cleanse Before? What Was Your Experience?

What is a juice cleanse?

A juice cleanse is a period of one to 40 days where you take incredible care of yourself by giving your body an opportunity to take a break from the substances that create adrenal exhaustion, indigestion, acid reflux, cause inflammation, weight issues, allergies, fatigue, acidity, and chronic disease.

You generally eliminate:

  1. Coffee
  2. Alcohol
  3. Refined sugars
  4. Processed starches
  5. Gluten
  6. Dairy
  7. Meat
  8. Negativity
  9. Inactivity
  10. Disconnect to your Divinity

You generally replace your diet and lifestyle with:

  1. Herbal tea
  2. 1/2 your body weight in ounces of water per day
  3. Fresh veggie & fruit juices
  4. Meditation & prayer
  5. Affirmations
  6. Yoga & exercise
  7. Sleep

When you give your system a break, your body has time and energy to get rid of toxins and clean house. 

Think of it like this: what do you do when you get a day off work? Most of us do things like catch up on errands, vacuum, do laundry or take out the trash. Our digestive systems do the equivalent of this, but on the inside, when they get a day off from their regular job. The longer the break, the more deep cleaning that gets done.

What Can a Juice Cleanse Do?

Some of the effects of a cleanse can include:

  • Weight loss
  • Revved up energy
  • Diminished aches & pains
  • Balanced pH and sugar levels
  • Increased mental clarity
  • Restored liver function
  • Blood, tissue and organ cleansing
  • Strengthened immune system
  • Diminish allergies
  • Balanced hormones
  • Dreamy sleep patterns
  • Cleared complexion
  • Glowing hair and strong nails
  • Improved self-image
  • Feeling of lightness

What happens to your body when you cleanse?

In a nutshell, cleansing creates optimal conditions for the body to clean itself out. Your digestive system doesn’t have solid foods to break down and process, so it begins to pull out toxins that have been trapped in your body’s mucus, blood and tissues. It puts these toxins back into circulation so that they can be eliminated through your pores, feces or urine. Although it doesn’t sound glamorous, this is a proven method for preventing sickness and disease.

Detoxing your body will eventually reward you with glowing, radiant skin and vibrancy. However, there could be a period of transition where you experience detox symptoms. Headaches, pimples, fatigue, anger and rashes are all natural signs that toxins are leaving the body.

Rather than feeling discouraged and making a run for your nearest tub of ice cream, work with your system and understand that it’s a good thing that the toxins are leaving. It’s better out than in!

Food Becomes Medicine

A juice cleanse uses vegetables and fruits (with the fiber removed through the juicing process) to naturally clean out your body and restore health. You can use specific foods to support cleansing different parts of the body.

For example, beets are great for cleansing the liver. Cucumbers are excellent for the skin. Carrots are great for the eyes. Grapefruits work wonders on the liver. All leafy green vegetables clean up the bloodstream.

What juice cleanse is best for me?

When choosing a juice cleanse you’ll want to think about your overall intention for the process. This can help inform how long you choose to cleanse and aid you in noticing if a juice cleanse is the right type of cleanse for you.

There are other types of cleanses that you can look into as well. Some other types of cleanses include raw food cleanse, whole food cleanse, salt water detox and the lemonade diet (Master Cleanse).

If a juice cleanse is right for you, here’s a checklist to help you make sure you’re choosing a well-rounded program:

  • Includes a pre-cleanse and post-cleanse transition period
  • Focus on mind + body by incorporating meditation, exercise & journaling
  • Encourages enemas and/ or colonics to support the elimination of toxins
  • Encourages daily exercise
  • Provides recipes
  • Includes FAQs
  • Encourages eight hours of sleep per night
  • Supplies a list of recommended tools
  • Has a forum or another means of getting support
