    I really liked this one:

“A man who views the world the same at fifty as he did at twenty has wasted thirty years of his life.” – Muhammad Ali

I have a few favorite quotes that really inspire me to keep pounding away at whatever it is I am trying to accomplish or be an expert at. Here’s my favorite…

“Successful men are influenced by the desire for pleasing results. Failures are influenced by the desire for pleasing methods and are inclined to be satisfied with such results as can be obtained by doing things they like to do.” ~ Albert Gray

That one is worth reading twice in slow motion. Less concern with the how and more attention on the why… I love it.

Awesome addition to the list Sean. I like it. :)

  2. Dan January 9, 2012 at 6:37 am #

    Great quotes!

One of my favourites is from Bruce Lee – “If you spend too much time thinking about a thing, you’ll never get it done.”

  3. Yvonne Root January 9, 2012 at 6:48 am #

There are so many quotes which I love. Here is one I find quite compelling.

“Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot,
Nothing is going to get better. It’s not.”
    ― Dr. Seuss, The Lorax

  4. Steve MacCormack January 9, 2012 at 6:52 am #

My favorite is this one…“People wonder why first-time directors can make a brilliant picture, then suck on the second one. It’s because they’re a little terrified the first time. So they listen to all the experts around them.” – James Caan

one of my personal favorites is ” you can make a life, or you can make excuses but you can not do both.” I must admit that I think I modified that one a bit to make it more my own…

and I also really love this one from a comment by Sean Davis…“Successful men are influenced by the desire for pleasing results. Failures are influenced by the desire for pleasing methods and are inclined to be satisfied with such results as can be obtained by doing things they like to do.” ~ Albert Gray

thanks for all the great work guys! It is much appreciated.

Caleb, this is a GREAT collection. You hit the big ones and gave me some new food for thought.

While I don’t know who it might be attributed to, the one thought that resonates with me day in and day out is “enjoy the process.”

Some might view that as a fairly trite aphorism, but I find it reminds me to live in the present and be focused on the tasks at hand.

    • Caleb Wojcik January 9, 2012 at 7:46 am #

A similar quote to the one you are talking about Joan would be:

“Focus on the journey, not the destination. Joy is found not in finishing an activity but in doing it.” – Greg Anderson

  6. Tim Hadfield January 9, 2012 at 8:06 am #

    Caleb – these are great!

Two others I like (both from legendary Basketball coach John Wooden:

“If you’re not making mistakes, then you’re not doing anything. I’m positive that a doer makes mistakes.”

“Success comes from knowing that you did your best to become the best that you are capable of becoming.”

    Johann Wolgang von Goethe.

  8. dance4everDANSE January 9, 2012 at 8:36 am #

“Any man who reads too much and uses his own brain too little falls into lazy habits of thinking.” – Albert Einstein

Excellent quotes to start the week; thank you!

  10. Kurt Swann January 9, 2012 at 9:09 am #

    Thanks Caleb . . . always like to read new quotes! Here’s a few that I like . . . Kurt

Whatever we learn to do we learn by actually doing it. Men come to be builders, for instance, by building and harp players by playing the harp. In the same way, by doing just acts we become just. By doing self-controlled acts we become self-controlled. By doing brave acts, we become brave.

    Aristotle

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence therefore, is not an act but a habit.

    Aristotle

  11. Jason Newland January 9, 2012 at 9:47 am #

A goal without action is a wish.
    –Joe Friel

  12. beowuff January 9, 2012 at 11:22 am #

One of my favorite quotes is from Linus Torvalds.

“People disagree with me. I just ignore them.”

This is important for me to reflect on often. Some people just don’t get what you are doing. And that’s okay. As long as you get it, it doesn’t matter.

  13. Kevin January 9, 2012 at 12:01 pm #

Whenever I start to feel inadequate or insufficient – especially professionally – I think of this:

Your duty is to be; and not be this or that.
    Ramana Maharshi

It always seems to help me re-center and start moving again.

“Top talent isn’t driven by money and power, but by the opportunity to be a part of something huge, that will change the world, and for which they are really passionate.”

“Excellence is the result of caring more than others think wise, risking more than others think safe, dreaming more than others think practical, and expecting more than others think possible.”

“Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”

the teachings of an old kung-fu master:

    * It takes you 2-4 years to get good at something.
    * It takes you another 2-4 years to get really good at something.
    * It takes you a lifetime to become a master at something.

    Blessings,
    Ron

I like the first one: “An expert is a man who has made all the mistakes which can be made, in a narrow field.” – Niels Bohr

As for one of my own quotes that motivates me… Somehow, this one does the trick: “So much time. So little to do. Wait a minute. Scratch that. Reverse it. Thank you.” – Willy Wonka.

I think my all time favorite comes from Sydney Poitier:

The future starts today, not tomorrow.

  27. Jonathan Stuart October 6, 2012 at 9:52 am #

Great post and love the “We are all experts in our own little niches” quote from Alex Trebek! With his experience hosting Jeopardy for more than 25 years, he has definitely seen that first hand.

  28. Vane November 28, 2012 at 12:15 pm #

I used to listen to this line from a Madonna song repeatedly taking my girls to gymnastics.

“If at first you don’t succeed,
    here’s some advice that you should heed;
Get up again over and over, Get up again over and over.”

    It goes way past gymnastics…

  29. Etan March 9, 2013 at 3:55 pm #

Favorite: “An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less.” – Nicholas M. Butler

Working on this every single day.
